About the Avionics
The rocket's avionics system consists of two boards: the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Flight Control Unit (FCU). I am responsible for the design, fabrication, and assembly of ECU which is pictured below. The board has 10 MOSFETs for solenoid control, a dual H-Bridge motor driver, 10 thermocouple amplifiers, 3 15-channel multiplexers, 13 current sensors, logic level shifters, and a 4 channel 16 bit ADC for the systems pressure transducers. The board was designed using Eagle and was assembled by hand. It is currently being programmed and will be tested during the next static test fire.
I designed the enclosure in Solidworks and machined the enclosure at home on my CNC and Mill. The mini XLR connectors provide a robust and modular locking connection to all solenoids, comms, and sensors within the rocket. The external USB port allows convenient post-installation programming and debugging. The NXP processor we chose allows for a 200KHz data log rate with comms enabled. The NXP chip was not integrated directly on the PCB in order to lessen development time and allow the processor to be easily swapped out.
Updates to come...
